Wall. Flowers.

In 2022 I took part in a residency for female artists at the fortress of Franzensfeste in South Tyrol. The theme of the residency was “Courage” and I decided to interpret this word using flowers.

Flowers in this project, became a symbol for women. Both grow in all types of situation, regardless of the circumstances around them, they push their way through, whether it’s sand, soil or stone. Even though flowers look delicate and fragile, they are actually very strong and very courageous. They withstand a lot of hardships and they bloom, giving us colour, love and happiness.

I made the flowers using paper, papier-mâché, wire, beads and wood. Each flower, just as each woman, is different and has its own character.

The contrast between the fortress and flowers was also very interesting and inspiring. A symbol of war, power and masculinity joining hands with something colourful, delicate and feminine.

The title of the piece I created is “Wall.Flowers.” This refers to the flowers growing out of the stone, but also to the situation of many women, who are often left on the side. With my artwork, I would like to give recognition to these women.
